Mr. Townsend is president of Townsend Engineering Inc., with locations in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Panama City, Florida. In 2006-07, he served as president of ASHRAE, where he focused the Society’s efforts on The ASHRAE Promise: A Sustainable Future, highlighting ASHRAE’s work in sustainability in the building environment. His achievements as president include launching ASHRAE’s first ever certification program, accelerating and expanding the Advanced Energy Design Guide series, setting more stringent savings for ASHRAE’s energy standard, and providing resources on how ASHRAE can minimize the impact of its meetings on the environment.
More on the Topic:
ASHRAE members must "carry the fire" to help provide for a sustainable future, according to ASHRAE Presidential Member Terry Townsend. Townsend notes that during the Cherokee's march on the Trail of Tears, they carried with them coals of their sacred fire. For them, carrying the fire, which they considered the spirit of the people, meant life would continue. ASHRAE members must also carry the fire to ensure that life improves for future generations, he said. Townsend's speech updates members on the Society's work in research, standards, publication, education and other outreach efforts. "As the comfort makers of mankind, we must develop the definitive technical guidance, innovative engineering applications and leading-edge research to take care of mankind by providing technical guidance to help achieve a sustainable future," he said. "It is our time to step forward and take a leadership position as the engineering engine of the global sustainability effort."
